Former Vice President Sambo Denies Defection Rumours to APC

19 June 2025

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Arc. Mohammed Namadi Sambo, GCON, has firmly rebutted claims circulating on social media and in certain media outlets that he has defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The allegations, described as “entirely false and without basis,” have been dismissed as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public.

In a statement issued by Umar Sani, former media adviser to Sambo, the claims were labelled as “a fabrication laced with mischief.” The statement clarified that a photograph used to support the defection narrative, showing Sambo with Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, was misleading. The image, taken years ago during a condolence visit by the governor to Sambo’s Abuja residence following the death of Sambo’s brother, Sani Sambo, has been misrepresented to fit a false narrative.

Sambo’s team further noted that the former vice president is set to attend the commissioning of a 300-bed hospital in Kaduna on Thursday, 19 June 2025. The hospital, a project initiated during Sambo’s tenure, underscores his ongoing commitment to public service and the development of Kaduna State. His presence at the event, possibly to deliver remarks, should not be interpreted as a political endorsement or evidence of a partisan shift.

“For the avoidance of doubt, His Excellency, Arc. Mohammed Namadi Sambo remains a loyal and committed member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). He has no intention of joining any other political party,” the statement read. The defection story was described as a calculated move to “sow confusion and achieve cheap political mileage.”

The public and media have been urged to disregard the misinformation and treat it with contempt. Sambo’s team called for responsible reporting to prevent the spread of such unfounded claims.
