Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga Dies in India Aged 80

Nairobi, 15 October 2025 – Raila Odinga, the veteran Kenyan politician and former Prime Minister, has passed away at the age of 80 while receiving medical treatment in India. The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader suffered a cardiac arrest during a morning walk in Kochi, Kerala, according to multiple reports.

Odinga, often referred to as “Baba” by his supporters, had been a towering figure in Kenyan politics for decades. He served as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 in a power-sharing government following the disputed 2007 elections. Known for his relentless pursuit of democratic reforms, Odinga made five unsuccessful bids for the presidency, most recently in 2022.

He flew to India on 3 October amid speculation about his health, though details of his condition were not publicly disclosed at the time. His death marks another instance of an African leader passing away abroad, highlighting ongoing concerns about healthcare infrastructure on the continent.

Tributes have poured in from across Kenya and beyond. President William Ruto described Odinga as a “patriot and visionary” in a statement, while opposition figures hailed him as a champion of the people. Social media platforms, including X, have been flooded with messages of condolence and reflections on his legacy.

Odinga’s family has yet to announce funeral arrangements, but a state funeral is expected given his stature in Kenyan history. He is survived by his wife, Ida, and several children.

This developing story will be updated as more information becomes available.
