Tinubu’s Planned Visit to Benue: Hypocrisy or Hollow Empathy?

President Bola Tinubu’s decision to reschedule his visit from Kaduna to Benue State on 18 June 2025 has sparked debate, with many questioning the timing and sincerity behind the move. The visit, intended to address a recurring crisis that has claimed numerous lives and caused significant destruction, follows a long period of apparent inaction, leading to accusations that the President has neglected the people he governs.

Critics argue that Tinubu’s sudden focus on Benue suggests a reactive stance rather than genuine concern, especially given his earlier silence on the escalating conflict. This delay has fuelled doubts about his empathy and compassion, with some asking whether he is equipped to lead during such crises. The pre-visit dispatch of senior officials and the planned town hall meeting are seen as steps forward, but they fail to erase concerns over his prolonged disengagement.

Tinubu’s past condemnations of the violence and expressions of condolence are viewed by detractors as hollow, lacking the timely action needed to support affected communities. As the visit nears, many will scrutinise whether it brings substantive solutions or merely serves as a superficial gesture.
