Arsenal opened their 2026/27 Premier League title defence with a commanding 3-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium on Friday night.
Goals from Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard secured a comfortable three points for Mikel Arteta’s side in the season’s opening fixture, which kicked off at 8:00pm BST.
The Gunners took control early. Havertz broke the deadlock in the 15th minute, finishing neatly after good work from Riccardo Calafiori. Saka doubled the lead eight minutes later, capitalising on a parried cross to roll the ball into an empty net. Ødegaard added the third just four minutes into the second half, his effort finding the net after a neat combination involving Saka and Ben White.
It was a dominant performance from the champions against Frank Lampard’s Coventry, who were making their return to the top flight after a 25-year absence. The visitors offered little threat and were unable to disrupt Arsenal’s rhythm for long periods.
The result leaves Arsenal top of the fledgling Premier League table with three points from their first match, while Coventry sit bottom after a difficult evening in north London.
Arsenal reached the UEFA Champions League final last football season.
Arteta’s side will look to build on this strong start when they travel to Aston Villa next weekend.
