The Nigeria Police Force has strongly denounced an unprovoked assault on its operatives in Edo State, while also launching an investigation into a fatal incident in Oyo State that claimed the life of a 14-year-old boy.

In the early hours of Monday, 20 May 2025, members of the Force Intelligence Department - Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) were attacked by a mob in Okhuimwun Community, Ovia North-East Local Government Area, Edo State. The officers, travelling from Lagos through Edo, encountered a roadblock near the University of Benin (UNIBEN) axis. The mob, in what police described as an "unlawful display of aggression," attacked the operatives with stones, sticks, and other dangerous objects, leaving two officers seriously injured.

Despite the provocation, the police commended the restraint shown by the operatives, who refrained from using force. The injured officers are now receiving medical treatment and are reported to be in stable condition. The Nigeria Police Force has launched an investigation into the incident, vowing to take legal action against those responsible. The Force also issued a stern warning against acts of lawlessness and aggression towards its personnel, who are dedicated to maintaining public safety.

In a separate development, the Inspector-General of Police has ordered a thorough investigation into a tragic incident in Oyo State involving personnel from the Oyo State Police Command and the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYTMA). The incident resulted in the death of 14-year-old Kehinde Alade. The officer involved in the shooting has been taken into custody, and the Inspector-General has assured the public that the investigation will be transparent, with findings to be made public to ensure justice is served. He extended his condolences to the family of the deceased.

The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property, urging citizens to remain law-abiding and to address grievances through peaceful and lawful channels.
