Nnamdi Kanu Bolsters Legal Team with Six Senior Advocates Ahead of Court Dates

Abuja, 24 April 2025 – Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has significantly strengthened his legal defence team by adding four more Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) to his roster, as announced by his lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor. This development comes ahead of Kanu’s scheduled court appearances on 29 April, 2 May, and 6 May 2025 at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The newly appointed SANs joining the defence team are Professor Onyechi Ikpeazu, Emeka Etiaba, Mela Audu Nunghe, and Dr Joseph Akubo. They will work alongside Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, and Uchenna Njoku, SAN, who were already part of Kanu’s legal counsel. This brings the total number of SANs representing Kanu to six, supported by a broader team of 22 lawyers and family friends of the defendant, as outlined in a letter from Aloy Ejimakor Legal Services (Obidimkp Chambers) addressed to the Deputy Chief Registrar of the Federal High Court.

The letter, dated 24 April 2025, formally notified the court of the legal team’s composition and requested the court’s attention to accommodate the listed representatives during the upcoming hearings. The legal team includes notable figures such as Patrick Agazie, Jude Ugwunayi, and Emmanuel Christian, alongside family friends like Prince Emmanuel Kanu and Princess Nnena Kanu.

The expansion of his legal team underscores the high stakes of the case as it progresses through the Federal High Court. The court sittings on 29 April, 2 May, and 6 May are expected to be pivotal, with Kanu’s bolstered legal team set to present his defence. Observers anticipate robust representation given the seniority and expertise of the advocates involved.

Aloy Ejimakor expressed gratitude for the court’s anticipated cooperation, noting the importance of ensuring all listed representatives are accommodated during the proceedings. The trial continues to be a focal point for discussions on justice, regional tensions, and legal representation in Nigeria.
