Zelenskyy Urges Ceasefire and Proposes Talks with Putin in Türkiye
Kyiv, 11 May 2025 – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for a comprehensive and enduring ceasefire to commence on 12 May, laying the groundwork for diplomatic negotiations to end the ongoing conflict with Russia. In a statement posted on social media, Zelenskyy expressed hope that the ceasefire would halt the violence and pave the way for meaningful dialogue.
The Ukrainian leader also announced his intention to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Türkiye on Thursday, 15 May, to discuss pathways to peace. “There is no point in prolonging the killings,” Zelenskyy wrote, urging Russia to seize the opportunity for talks without delay. He added, “I hope that this time the Russians will not look for excuses.”
Zelenskyy’s proposal comes amid intensified international efforts to broker a resolution to the conflict, which has caused significant loss of life and widespread destruction. The choice of Türkiye as a venue reflects its role as a neutral mediator in previous negotiations between the two nations.
As the world awaits Russia’s response, global leaders have reiterated calls for de-escalation, with many expressing cautious optimism about the prospect of renewed diplomacy. The coming days will be critical in determining whether Zelenskyy’s outreach can break the deadlock and bring an end to hostilities.
