Peter Obi Visits Niger State to Offer Condolences and Support Amid Devastating Floods

Niger State, Nigeria – On Monday, 2 June 2025, Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and prominent Nigerian politician, visited Niger State to express solidarity with the government and residents affected by catastrophic floods in the Mokwa area. Accompanied by Senator Nenadi Usman and Dr Yunusa Tanko, Obi met with the state’s Deputy Governor, His Excellency Yakubu Garba, to discuss the urgent needs of the impacted communities.

The floods, described as one of the worst natural disasters in recent memory, have claimed over 200 lives, left approximately 1,000 people missing, displaced more than 3,000 residents, and destroyed numerous homes. Obi, who had been in the United Kingdom the previous day, revealed he had already spoken with Niger State Governor, His Excellency Mohammed Umaru Bago, to offer his condolences.

During his visit, Obi emphasised the collective responsibility of Nigerians to support one another in times of crisis. “This incident and others happening all over Nigeria affect us all, and as a family, we must come together to care, comfort, and stand together, especially in times of grief and difficulty,” he stated.

Obi called on the Federal Government, support agencies, and well-meaning Nigerians to provide assistance to alleviate the suffering of those affected. He also praised the resilience of Governor Bago and local response teams for their efforts in addressing the crisis.

As a gesture of support, Obi announced an initial donation of ₦20 million to aid the state government’s relief efforts, pledging to continue assisting the people of Niger State. “I pray that God comforts the families of those who have lost their loved ones, protects those still missing, and grants healing and strength to everyone affected by this disaster,” Obi added, expressing hope for the state’s recovery.
