Nnamdi Kanu Trial: Prosecution Presents First Witness in Abuja Federal High Court

Abuja, 29 April 2025 – The trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), resumed today at the Federal High Court in Abuja, with the prosecution presenting its first witness. Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu’s special counsel, provided an update on the proceedings, stating that the witness, identified only by initials, testified from behind a screen as permitted by the presiding judge.

In a statement posted on X, Ejimakor noted, “Today’s MNK hearing has been concluded. The prosecution presented its first witness who was not identified by name but by initials only & he testified from behind a screen, as was approved by the Judge. On 2nd May, we shall cross-examine him & test his veracity.”

Kanu, who faces a seven-count terrorism charge, has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his controversial extradition from Kenya in June 2021. The case, reassigned to Justice James Omotosho in March 2025 following the recusal of Justice Binta Nyako, is set to continue with the cross-examination of the witness on 2 May 2025.

The trial has drawn significant attention, with Kanu’s legal team previously raising concerns about judicial bias and advocating for the case to be transferred to a Federal High Court in the Southeast. Ejimakor and Kanu have expressed readiness to challenge any perceived institutional bias, emphasizing adherence to the rule of law.

As the proceedings move forward, Kanu’s legal team is preparing to rigorously test the prosecution’s evidence in the upcoming session, marking a critical phase in this high-profile case.
