Lagos Governor Meets BCG Africa Lead Amid Controversy with Peter Obi

Lagos, 30 April 2025 – Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu welcomed Ms. Lisa Ivers, Africa Lead at Boston Consulting Group (BCG), to Lagos House Marina today for a high-level meeting focused on fostering strategic partnerships.

The discussion highlighted opportunities for collaboration aimed at driving sustainable growth and innovation across Lagos State. Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasised the state’s commitment to leveraging global expertise to enhance development initiatives.

This meeting comes amid a public controversy sparked by Sanwo-Olu’s criticism of Peter Obi, former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, over comments Obi made at Johns Hopkins University in the United States. Obi had compared Nigeria’s poverty levels to those of China and Vietnam, attributing the country’s challenges to poor leadership and inadequate investment in education and healthcare. In response, Sanwo-Olu accused Obi of “de-marketing” Nigeria and questioned his record, alleging that poverty in Anambra worsened during Obi’s tenure and that he failed to build schools or hospitals. The remarks have ignited a heated debate, with Obi’s supporters defending his critique and accusing Sanwo-Olu of deflecting from current governance issues.

Details of specific projects discussed with BCG were not disclosed, but the meeting underscores Lagos State’s ongoing efforts to position itself as a hub for innovation and economic progress in Africa.
