ECOWAS Celebrates 50 Years with Silver Jubilee in Lagos

Lagos, Nigeria – On 28 May 2025, member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) convened at the Nigeria Institute for International Affairs to mark the 50th anniversary of the organisation’s founding. The Silver Jubilee of the ECOWAS Commission, held on the exact date and location where the Treaty of Lagos was signed in 1975, was a moment to reflect on the bloc’s achievements, confront its challenges, and chart a course for a more robust future.

The commemorative event brought together leaders and representatives from across West Africa to evaluate ECOWAS’s role in fostering regional integration, economic development, and political stability over the past five decades. Discussions focused on strengthening cooperation among member states, addressing ongoing issues such as security threats and economic disparities, and exploring innovative strategies to enhance the organisation’s impact in the region.

The celebration underscored ECOWAS’s enduring commitment to unity and progress in West Africa, with delegates reaffirming their dedication to building a stronger, more resilient community for future generations.
