Cross-Examination of Prosecution Witness Continues in FRN v MNK Case

Abuja, 21 May 2025 – The ongoing legal proceedings in the case of Federal Republic of Nigeria (FRN) versus Mazi Nnamdi Kanu (MNK) saw the cross-examination of a prosecution witness commence today, with further questioning scheduled for tomorrow, 22 May 2025, according to a statement by Aloy Ejimakor, a prominent lawyer involved in the case.

The cross-examination forms a critical part of the defence's strategy to challenge the prosecution’s evidence. Ejimakor, posting on the social media platform X, confirmed the development, stating, “Cross examination of prosecution witness in #FRNversusMNK, which commenced today, shall continue tomorrow (22nd May).” This follows a series of hearings, with earlier sessions on 14 and 21 May dedicated to testing the veracity of prosecution witnesses.

The case, which has garnered significant attention, involves Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Previous court sessions have included testimony from a prosecution witness who was permitted to testify anonymously behind a screen, as authorised by the presiding judge. The defence team has been preparing for what Ejimakor described as “arduous cross-examinations” to scrutinise the prosecution’s claims thoroughly.

On 8 May 2025, Ejimakor noted that the prosecution continued presenting its case, with the defence anticipating limited time for cross-examination during that session. The court subsequently adjourned further hearings to 14, 21, and 22 May to allow the defence adequate preparation time. The judge also reiterated a directive prohibiting both legal teams from giving press interviews, aiming to maintain the integrity of the proceedings.
