New Technical College in Enugu Signals Bold Shift in Nigerian Education

Enugu, Nigeria – On 11 June 2025, the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, officially commissioned the Government Technical College (GTC) Enugu, a pioneering institution aimed at transforming vocational education in Enugu State. The event, part of her two-day working visit, was hailed as a landmark moment by Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, who described the college as a cornerstone of the state’s ambitious educational reforms.

The GTC Enugu, the first of eight planned technical and vocational colleges across Enugu’s federal constituencies, marks a significant departure from Nigeria’s traditional rote-based learning system. “We are moving beyond a system that emphasises memorisation to one that values creativity, critical thinking, and hands-on problem-solving,” Governor Mbah stated. The initiative seeks to equip young Nigerians with practical skills to thrive in a rapidly evolving global economy.

Once a symbol of neglect, the GTC Enugu has been revitalised in under a year into a state-of-the-art hub for skills development. The sprawling campus now features 24 ultra-modern training centres, covering fields such as ICT and digital innovation, renewable energy, welding and fabrication, auto-mechatronics, refrigeration and air conditioning, fashion design, and hospitality. Complementing these are two Smart Green Schools and two modern hostels capable of accommodating up to 1,000 male and female students.

The First Lady praised Enugu State’s commitment to responsible governance and impactful public investment during the commissioning. Governor Mbah expressed gratitude for her support, underscoring the state’s focus on human capital development. “No nation can rise above the quality of its people,” he said, reaffirming his administration’s dedication to preparing students not just for exams, but for meaningful contributions to society.

The establishment of GTC Enugu sets a precedent for educational reform in Nigeria, with plans for similar institutions across the state expected to further bolster youth empowerment and economic growth.
