US Ambassador Hosts Mandela Washington Fellows in Nigeria

Lagos, 9 May 2025 – US Ambassador Mills welcomed 58 Mandela Washington Fellows from Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, and Eritrea to a pre-fellowship orientation, underscoring the significance of their upcoming experience in the United States. The event, hosted by the US Mission in Nigeria, forms part of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) 2025 programme.

During the gathering, Ambassador Mills urged the fellows to apply the knowledge and skills gained during their fellowship to drive positive change in Nigeria and across West Africa. The Mandela Washington Fellowship, a flagship programme of YALI, empowers young African leaders through academic coursework, leadership training, and networking opportunities in the US.

The US Mission in Nigeria highlighted the event on social media, noting the ambassador’s emphasis on the fellows’ role in fostering regional development. The initiative continues to strengthen ties between the US and African nations, promoting leadership and innovation.
