Ouagadougou, 9 May 2025 – Capitaine Ibrahim Traoré, President of Burkina Faso, attended a grand parade and wreath-laying ceremony in Russia today to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazism in World War II. In a statement shared on social media, Traoré paid tribute to the Soviet Army and Allied forces, describing the historic triumph as a source of inspiration for Burkina Faso’s ongoing fight against terrorism and imperialism.

“This historic victory is a source of confidence for me in the wholehearted commitment of my country and the AES Confederation to winning the war against terrorism and imperialism at all costs,” Traoré wrote. The AES Confederation, comprising Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, has prioritised regional security and sovereignty in recent years.

Traoré underscored that the security of Burkina Faso and the well-being of its people remain the driving forces behind his government’s actions. He also praised the “mutually beneficial partnership” between Burkina Faso and Russia, highlighting strengthened bilateral ties.
The ceremony, held in Moscow, marks a significant moment of remembrance for the millions who perished in the fight against Nazism. For Traoré, it also serves as a reminder of the resilience needed to confront modern challenges, including insurgency and external pressures in the Sahel region.

Burkina Faso has faced escalating violence from jihadist groups in recent years, prompting the government to seek international partnerships to bolster its security efforts. The growing relationship with Russia has included military and economic cooperation, reflecting a broader shift in the country’s foreign policy.
As the AES Confederation continues its campaign against terrorism, Traoré’s presence at the Moscow event signals a firm commitment to drawing on historical lessons to shape a secure future for the region.
