LAGOS, Nigeria – A storm of controversy has erupted over the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB)’s handling of the admission process for Chinedu Okeke, a standout candidate who achieved the highest score in Nigeria’s history of JAMB examinations. The young scholar, a native of Njikoka Local Government Area in Anambra State, is facing allegations of identity manipulation, a claim that has sparked outrage among supporters who believe he is being unfairly targeted.
Mr Okeke, currently residing in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos, has presented his local government identification certificate from Njikoka Local Government Council, his 2021/2022 University of Nigeria (UNN) admission screening slip, and his West African Examinations Council (WAEC) results from 2021. These documents consistently list Njikoka as his local government, debunking any suggestion that he has misrepresented his origins. Despite this, JAMB has accused him of securing multiple admissions under manipulated identities, as reported by Sahara Reporters.
The allegations have led to significant reputational damage for the hardworking youngster, who has been celebrated for his academic excellence. Critics argue that JAMB’s actions are unjust, with some suggesting a possible bias against Mr Okeke due to his Igbo heritage. “This is unfair to this hardworking youngster,” said Mr AlexOnyia echoing the sentiments of many who feel he is being victimised.
Supporters are calling for JAMB to compensate Mr Okeke for the distress caused and to retract the damaging accusations. The situation has raised broader questions about the fairness of Nigeria’s admission processes and the treatment of high-achieving students from diverse backgrounds.
